In 1906, a group of local ladies had a bright idea. They wanted to help their community. They found that when a neighbor was ailing or recuperating, they often needed some special equipment to make their recovery easier.
From this simple idea, The Society for Lending Comforts to the Sick was formed. They began by purchasing new hospital equipment and loaned it, free, to anyone in the town. Their beginning was a humble one, but the idea, and the impact on Smithtown, was huge.
Today, the Society is still going strong. Entirely volunteer-run, the Society lends hospital and sick room equipment, FREE OF CHARGE, to anyone living in the township of Smithtown . All the equipment is in perfect working order, disinfected thoroughly and maintained impeccably.
Today, as always, the Society operates as a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to helping our community.
At our facility at 71 Blydenburgh Avenue in Smithtown, we house all manner of hospital equipment -- everything from wheelchairs to walkers to crutches -- anything the recuperating patient might need to make their home care more comfortable.
Our funds come from generous donations of our friends and supporters. We also raise much needed support through our Thrift Shop which is open on Tuesday mornings from 8am - noon and Wednesday evenings from 6-8pm from April through November. Donations of your gently-used clothing and household items will be gratefully accepted during Thrift Shop hours.
After the purchase of new equipment for our town residents to borrow, any additional funds go back to our community. Over the years we have given five handicapped-accessible vans to the Town of Smithtown. We also give financial scholarships to a high school graduate of each of Smithtown's four high schools who will be entering the healthcare profession. The Smithtown Senior Citizens are especially important to us -- we make a financial donation to them each year so that their special holiday events can be fully enjoyed by all our seniors. Other local charities we have helped include Christian Nursing Hospice, St. Johnland, the Parkinson's Therapy Center and the Guide Dog Foundation.
Our lending hours: Monday - Friday, 6-8PM
Saturday, 8 - 10 AM. Please call 265-1674 to confirm or for more information.
