Q: Are postmarks accepted or must my property tax payment reach the office by the due date?
A: Payment for taxes sent by mail can only be accepted by the date postmarked on the envelope. A metered postmark is NOT acceptable. It is suggested that if a taxpayer is mailing a payment near the deadline date, payment should be forwarded by registered or certified mail, return receipt requested.

 
Q: If I did not receive my property tax bill, must I pay a penalty?
A: It is the responsibility of the homeowner to pay their property taxes. Even though the homeowner might not have received a tax bill, it is the owner’s obligation to secure a tax bill and remit payment on time. The taxpayer is liable for all penalties and interest on late payments.

 
Q: If I just purchased property in Smithtown Township, do I need to contact anyone regarding my Real Property Taxes?
A: Yes. We recommend that you contact the Office of the Receiver of Taxes at your earliest convenience to obtain a current bill and ascertain when the next tax payment is due.

 
Q: If I satisfied my mortgage whom should I notify regarding my Real Property Taxes?
A: Notify the Office of the Receiver of Taxes to request that all future tax bills be sent directly to you.

 
Q: If I spend part of the year at a different address, how can I insure that I will receive my property tax bill before the deadline?
A: Our office can temporarily change your mailing address to insure that you receive your current tax bill in a timely fashion. Note that this must be done in writing.

 
Q: What if I can’t pay the total amount due on my property taxes?
A: The Receiver of Taxes and the County Treasurer accepts partial payments (minimum payment of $200.00) Interest and penalties are charge against any unpaid balance.

 
Q: What period does the property tax year cover?
A: Town, school and county taxes in Suffolk County cover the period from December 1st through November 30th of the following year.

 
Q: When are property tax bills mailed?
A: The Receiver of Taxes mails tax bills once a year around mid-December.

 
Q: When are property taxes due?
A: The first half is due on or before January 10th. The second half is due on or before May 31st.
